Farming Method
Tybee Oyster Company was built on a simple belief: exceptional oysters begin with respect for place.
We farm in the tidal waters off Tybee Island, where strong currents, deep exchange, and Georgia’s salt marsh ecosystem shape the character of every Salt Bomb.
This is aquaculture designed for our coast — engineered for performance, grounded in stewardship.
From Seed to Market
Every Salt Bomb moves through a deliberate cycle shaped by tide, time, and our hands..
01 — Seed Selection
We begin with carefully sourced oyster seed chosen for strength, growth consistency, and performance in Georgia’s high-salinity waters.
02 — Shore-Based Nursery (FLUPSY)
Seed arrives at approximately 2mm and is grown in our shore-based FLUPSY (Floating Upweller System). Continuous water flow delivers oxygen and nutrients while protecting early-stage oysters. In this controlled nursery environment, they grow from 2mm to just under one inch before transferring offshore.
03 — Transfer to Open Water
Once nursery-ready, oysters move to our offshore lease and into the FlipFarm floating basket system. Strong tidal exchange and Georgia’s salinity begin shaping shell structure and flavor.
04 — Grow-Out & Weekly Rotation
Baskets are handled regularly to promote deep cups and durable shells.
Each week, baskets are flipped above the waterline. Sun exposure naturally controls biofouling while strengthening the oysters.
05 — Harvest & Market
Oysters are hand-sorted, counted, and packed for chefs, retailers, and direct customers.
